Poetry Circus July 21, 2018

Please join me at the Poetry Circus at Griffith Park, July 21, 2018. This event is organized by poet and teacher Nicelle Davis. I wrote three short poems for this year’s event, on the theme, “Future Circus.” Submissions are still open! If you are interested, email nicelledavis@gmail.com.

To write my poems, first I thought about what acts would be considered spectacle in the future when anything is possible. I tried to sneak in pessimism about how the world’s rulers will ruin the beautiful with money and war. Next, I pretended to be a circus performer. Lastly, I imagined my daughter as a performer. This last poem I found cathartic. I imagined her as a powerful, unstoppable being, and it gave me a feeling of respite where the world’s news frightens me, for I am overcome by nightmarish visions on a daily basis. The poem of strength I wrote for my daughter makes me feel, though absurd, that she will survive in every possible way toward infinity… I hope you come and have a listen!
